Jewel of Indian fruits, Mango

This fruits is mango which is able to be gathered only between may to august in India.
This is my challenging story to eat the jewel of Indian fruits.

You know, living in India is a tough in work and in life for the Japanese. But I think that we also have been having a lot of good experience through the life in India. I'm going to write a story of such a good part of India.
Now, do you know where mango originally came from? Mango is indigenous plant of India. Indian mango has cultivated four thousand years ago. Mango was mentioned in holy scripture of buddhism as "holy tree".

Some Indians says they have a thousand kind of mango in our country. I don't know if it is true or not. But we can get many kind of mango in the indian's local market between may and august. Indian Mango gets ripe when the Indian monsoon begins every year. Indian monsoon comes in July, normally.
Of course, we can get it for the local price. It is around 20 JPY per one. So, I introduce  some kind of Indian mango below.

This is the king of mango named Alfonso. It has deep sweet and sour taste. This is the most famous and high-priced mango in India. The fact is that India exports this mango to Japan in small amount. The export to Japan was already over in this season.

This is named Safeda. Safeda means "White" in Hindu. Its taste is mild sweet and less sour. But it is bigger and cheaper than Alfonso. I like it.

This is named Chousa. The size of this mango is similar to Alfonso. The taste is deep sweet and a little bit spicy, I think... the most important fact of Chousa is that you can still eat it as long as it is nectariferous even if its color is green.

In mango season of India, you can eat mango as much as you want whenever you want to. Of course I love mango, it is so happy experience. In addition, there is a event called mango festival which is held at the end of June every year. I was looking forward to it this year.
Unfortunately, its schedule was changed by the organizer, it had already been over before I knew it.
But it is also a good experience for me. All I have to do is  just to watch the information carefully so I won't  miss it next year, as if I completely adapt myself to Indian culture.
Because I live here. This is India. Seize the day!!

Lead the way into "Hauz Khas Village" in Delhi, India

This photo is the fashionable neighborhood of Hauz Khas Village in Delhi.
This is my challenging story to go to the most fashionable neighborhood in India.

This district has been re-developed into fashionable town by new young designers and entrepreneurs. So Japanese call the district “Daikan-yama in Delhi”.

This district has two areas. One is fashionable area, the other is historical area. I write from a historical side, first.
This district was brought land into cultivation in 13th century by Ala al-Din Khalji. This century  also built the Qutub Minar which was already posted on past as Tour of the World Heritage "Qutub Minar". The district is called Hauz Khas. "Hauz"  means water storage pond and "Khas" means royal by Urdu. So Hauz Khas still have water storage pond like this photo.

Ala al-Din Khalji who was the third king of Khalji dynasty made not only "Hauz" but also expanded its territory, developed a culture and consolidated domestic politics. Now, you can see heritage of his made in Qutub Minar. He expanded the park of the land eleven times bigger than the original size.
And He constructed new gate and he tried to construct a new Minaret. But new Minaret was not complete like this photo which was taken at Qutub Minar park.

In the 14th century, Khalji dynasty was downfallen as punitive expedition by Tughluq dynasty. After that, Firuz Shah Tughlaq who was the third king of Tughluq dynasty also increased his own spread of land of Hauz Khas. He constructed new madrasa at Hauz Khas which means higher level school as Islamic word.

And, Hauz Khas have his tomb.
In this way, India have continued the flux and reflux of the tides like the other world.

Now, this district has changed in a positive way as a fashionable town.
This shop is specialized in stationery and books.

This shop sells Indian jewelry.

This shop sells bags designed by Indian young designers. I recommend it.

Also, this area has an art gallery.

Not only shops, Hauz Khas has some nice restaurants. This shop is cafe. This type of cafe is rare in India.

Surprisingly, This shop serves Futomaki which is a kind of Sushi. Japanese couple manage this shop.

More surprisingly, This shop serve dish of steak. Unfortunatly, We can eat buffalo meat in this restaurant. This taste is not bad.

Of course, you can eat Indian food in this area. This dish is Kashmiri cuisine. This is easy to taste for japanese. Which means it is not hot taste.

Now, this district has very good and friendly atmosphere like this photo. We really hope India  continues to increase good things without trouble.

But we had trouble of puncture like this photo at this time.

Tour of the World Heritage II "Churches and Convents of Goa"

This church decorated in baroque is a part of "Churches and Convents of Goa" as a world heritage.
This is my challenging story to visit world heritage in Goa, India.

Goa also have a world heritage. This heritage are churches and convents around old Goa district. In the middle of 16 century, old Goa district was developed very fast as a colony by Portuguese. which was subject to european culture and the Christians. Recent years, this mix culture district of churches and convents got certified from UNESCO as world heritage.

Representative example is a Church of St. Francis of Assisi.

This church was built by monks of Francis in 1517 as small worship place. In 1661, it was rebuilt. This church has sculpture in front of this church as patterns of Manuel(Portuguese style).

Most famous example of old Goa district is the Basillica of Bom Jesu.

This church was built in 1594, you can find a baroque style decoration in front of it.

Unlike the exterior, the interior of this church is simple renaissance style. Many christians was visiting for worship. Why this church is famous is because it has not only the beauty of the architecture but also Francisco de Javier is enshrined.

He is very famous missionary in Japan. Because he was the first man who visited Japan for extending of Christian religion. He took a missionary tour from Goa in 1548. He visited Malacca, Japan and China in this tour. Then, He met Anjiro who was a Japanese in Malacca, fateful. Anjiro was escaping from Satsuma(This is the old name of Kagoshima Pref.), Japan. Because he commit a crime of murder in Japan. He was confessed of a crime in Malacca and get baptized in this church as Christian name St. Pauro. Then, he became the pilot for Javier. They visited Satsuma, Japan together in 1549.

After visiting Japan, Javier headed for China. But he dead halfway through way to china in 1552. His body went to Goa via Malacca. Now, he rest in peace at Basillica of Bom Jesu. If you want to meet him, you can meet here every 10 years. Next is in 2014.

There is not only church but also view point for Indian. Of cause they amazingly looked deep into us, too. She might feel too hot. That's the reason why she had cut her hair like a "sister".

Run through on road in Goa

This bike is Bajaj Avenger which was made in India.
This is my challenging story to ride an Indian motorbike for round-touring in Goa.

My interest is touring with motorbike. When I lived in Japan ,I used to ride a big motorbike and had went to round-touring with it. India has many motorbike makers. For example, Hero, Bajaj, TVS, Honda, Yamaha and Royal Enfield etc.. Indian motorbike makers have provided 11 million bikes to market in the whole year on 2012. Of course, there is a flood of bikes on the Indian road. Then, Bajaj is the third largest motorbike makers in india. Bajaj makes mainly auto-rickshaws and motorbikes. It is also the largest shareholder of KTM. Which is amazing.
When we traveled to Goa, I found a rental bike shop specialized in Bajaj-made. I couldn't help but ride on a motorbike. So I rode on a Bajaj Avenger.

If you want to rent a motorbike in Goa, you should prepare ID and international driver license. If you don't have international license, you may rent a motorbike after showing your country's license. This rental fee was 700 Rs in my case. As soon as we ran about 1km, this motorbike suddenly stopped as it had ran out of gas. When I tried to change reserve tank, strange man came and set the reserve switch. I asked him why you helped us. He said he was the owner of the motorbike or bike shop which I rent a motorbike at. I don't  know if his story was true or not.

The petrol fee is high like Japan's. India is also importing oil from other country.

After I full it up, I ran through on road in Goa about 30km. The first place we visited in Goa was Fort Aguada.

The Fort Aguada was constructed in 1613 by Portuguese. The mission of this fort was to guard against enemy and to provide water to the ships.

This lighthouse was constructed in 1864. It was the oldest one in Asia. But now, this lighthouse had renovated as a sightseeing place and has no function as a beacon. Because new lighthouse had already constructed in another place.

This fort had 79 cannons in the past. From those gaps in this photo, cannons aimed at enemy's ships coming into the arabic sea.

Now, this place is the view point for Indian. They amazingly looked deep into us. It is normal situation for us in India. Because Japanese face is rare for Indian tourists from countryside.

In the next place, we ran to Panaji as a downtown in Goa.

Panaji is the capital city of Goa state. The city view of Panaji brings down the atmosphere of Portuguese‘s colonial.

This photo is a sessions court in panaji. These colorful walls and western architecture as colonial style become a part of living for the local Indians.

This is Immaculate Conception Church of Panaji. This church was constructed in 1541. You know, Goa was anchorage site. So sailors  prayed here for their safety sea travel.

40% of the Goan people are the Christians. which is very rare in India. So you can see many church in Goa. Goa prospered as a center of Christian missionary work in Asia.

Outside of the center of the downtown, you can see tropical Goan country view. In this time, I enjoyed motorbike touring while I was sun-drenched in India. It was less horse powered to me because it was 220cc. Still, I finally enjoyed motorbike again.

This is the route map of our motorbike trip in this time. Our trip distance was 110km. Which was a very short distance as a motorbike touring.
Point B is Fort Aguada. Point C is Immaculate Conception Church of Panaji. Point D is Basilica of Bom Jesus.
I will explain you about this church in the next post with the story of Francisco de Javier.

Explore the fascination of Goa

This photo is private resort in Goa, India.
This is my challenging story to explore the fascination of Goa.

Goa is an old and historical city.
In 1498, Vasco da Gama who was Portuguese man found ocean route via Cape-town in Africa to India. Until then, Goa was Islamic city. After that, in 1510, Goa became dominated by portuguese. In 1542, Francisco de Javier reached Goa. In 1548, he took a missionary tour from Goa to Japan.
Goa became a city of mix culture of the East, India and Portuguese. Goa was called " Rome of the East", "City of gold, Goa".

During recent years, India was independent from England in 1947. Also, India got back Goa from Portuguese in 1961.
Then, Goa became the resort city and then it became the holy land for backpackers and then became the city of drugs and music. In the 1990s, the music of "goa-trance" was created in Goa. Recent trance music is based on this goa-trance.

Now, Goa is the real resort. It is the best place to go for normal tourist. I don’t know how it is like in the club at night.

Goa is coastal city which is located in the southwest of India. So, there is a lot of fresh seafood in Goa like this photo.

I have been living in north India, so I haven't eaten fresh seafood very much. I enjoyed seafood as Goan food. Goan food is the mix of Indian and Portuguese food. In the past, I ate Macau food which was also the mix of Indian, Portuguese and Chinese food (Also, Macau was colony of Portuguese.). A long time ago, not only Christianity but also many cultures including food culture came down with the missionaries. You can really understand it if you eat the Goan local food.

Goa is the most popular place to honeymoon among Indians. It is not only the exoticism place but  also very beautiful city which is surprisingly not dusty unlike other Indian cities. I really recommend you to go to Goa on vacation. I will explain you in the next post about the city in Goa.
